Excessive hard disk activity vista

The constant HHD activity slows the computer to a crawl. Opening a browser takes longer than it takes to start my desktop PC running Windows 8 , lo in, and open a browser - even though that computer is five years old and has many programs installed. I have checked the HP forums and this issue has been reported several times and the answer is always "because Windows 10".

There was a thread on this forum previously, with many users reporting the same problem and many unanswered questions. Microsoft never answered the question but they locked the thread and said the question had run its course. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. It's so painful. This might be the last windows machine for me. Join Date Dec Posts 1, Re: Vista Excessive Disk Activity. Originally Posted by ssuing I'm having the same exact issue.

You don't need things wirting and reading all the time Especially when your not doing anything. Just under that is System again, which path leads to MSStemp.

Just under that is SearchIndexer. There seems to be a lot of processes tied to eachother so that even if I disable indexing service, it can still function. Maybe I have to disable System with the path that leads to Windows. It is a bit frustrating that gets so complicated. I don't know if I will cause large problems disabling this but I am ready to try. From what I've been able to determine, there is no way to control the timing of the definition updates For instance, mine kicks of at 10am every day while I'm in the middle of work.

I did find an article that discusses a registry entry that "determines how frequent and how fast in hours Microsoft Security Essentials will check for updates", but I've not tried it yet I thank everyone for giving me the answer.

Click OK when finished. The four columns will be added to Task Manager. If the columns are not visible because you need to scroll to the right , you can easily click and hold on a column, then drag it to the left and order the columns to your preference. As you can see from my Task Manager, vmware-vmx. NOTE: To easily identify the most active process, click on the column name to sort the data either highest to lowest or lowest to highest.

What's interesting, is that most of the disk thrashing that occurs is not from writing to disk, but caused by reading. Now that you know how to identify what is causing disk thrashing on your Computer, you can begin to troubleshoot.

Start by disbaling programs or process, Do not just uninstall applications. Make sure you pin point the problem and understand why it is occurring.
